The turn of the century and the death of arcades

VF remained too pure. It had a handful of new characters per game, next to no plot, and solo game modes focused around recreating an arcade-to-arcade fight setup, combined with no major gimmicks besides 3's variable arena heights, and no real flashiness. It was big because there was nothing like it at the start, and by the time VF3 was in arcades as a graphical tour de force, console and PC games were dealing with Tomb Raider and Quake 1. Then it took like half a decade for VF4 to come out, Tekken and Dead or Alive ramped up to the occasion rapidly, and soon enough VF got left in the dust as the game that wasn't overly special compared to devils, bears and panties.

Fighting games were never good, but Virtual Fighter came out at the turn of graphical tech. It was literally 'OOH GRAPHICS WOW', blind to how shit fighting games are. Consider one as dry as VF, and it's no wonder it fell off.

It was way too arcadey for console casuals. Not just the gameplay but the overall package

IIRC Sony paid for exclusivity on Ultimate, which factored into it being a day one PS+ game. Looks like they never budged on that, so Sega is changing it just enough to get around that.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. It's incredibly barebones. Shills will insist it's the chess od 3D fighting games, but the few players VF has will tell you Tekken 8, of all games, is far more technical.

It's been a 2D game after VF4.
You can see how well the majority of the EX-VF4 Top players are performing on the Street Fighter Series, and like only 1 or 2 guy actually knows how to play Tekken.

I'm in the same boat, hate Tekken, casual fan of SC, mostly play 2d. I'm wondering if I should even bother with VF, if the game is more than 10 dollars I'm just going to skip ever trying.
