UPDATE: The Oklahoma Sooners dropped their SEC debut to the Tennessee Volunteers 25-15 in Josh Heupel's return to Norman on Saturday night.
NORMAN —The last time OU and Tennessee faced off, it was a classic.
In 2015, the Sooners trailed 17-3 after three quarters before Baker Mayfield showed the magic that he became known for, hitting Sterling Shepard for a game-tying touchdown in the final minute of regulation and then again in the second overtime.
"The atmosphere was just incredible," former Sooners cornerback Zack Sanchez said this week.
Sanchez's interception ended the game.

When OU and Tennessee go head-to-head Saturday, the teams will look plenty different.
Josh Heupel, the last OU quarterback to win a national title, is the Volunteers' head coach. Former OU quarterback Joey Halzle is Heupel's quarterback coach/offensive coordinator.
Saturday is also the Sooners' first-ever SEC game.
"It brings a whole lot of extra added excitement," Sanchez said. "Something's gonna get shown on Saturday.
"I got total confidence in our guys and I think that defense is gonna show the nation exactly how good we are."

After having his touchdown run overturned on replay, Michael Hawkins connected on a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jovantae Barnes. But a penalty on the 2-point conversion led to a missed point-after attempt, making it 22-9 Vols.
The Vols had gone 19 consecutive quarters without allowing a touchdown, the longest streak in school history.
Hawkins went 5-for-7 passing for 43 yards on the drive.

OU looked like it had a monster start.
On the game’s third play, Tennessee defensive end James Pearce Jr. jumped offsides and Sooners quarterback Jackson Arnold reacted by throwing an apparent 76-yard touchdown pass to Brenen Thompson.
But officials stopped the play. Though Pearce was called for the penalty, Tennessee’s cornerback made contact with an OU receiver, making it a dead-ball penalty.
The Sooners picked up a first down on the next play, on an 18-yard pass to Deion Burks, but then the drive stalled.
Brent Venables opted to go for it on fourth-and-2 at midfield, but Arnold’s pass fell incomplete, giving the Volunteers the ball.

If pregame warmups are any indication, Branson Hickman appears ready to return as OU’s center.
Hickman and fellow offensive lineman Jake Taylor were listed as game-time decisions on the final SEC availability report before the game, though Taylor mostly watched warmups.
